Reasons people aren't taken you seriously as a Leader.

Introduction

Whatever industry you work in, how long you've been a leader, or what level of leader you are, there will be times when you feel like your peers and subordinates don't take you seriously in your leadership role (Edgar, 2004). If this resonates with you, take a look at these five things that may be preventing you from being taken seriously as a leader (Amabile & Khaire, 2008).

Reason 01: You don’t keep your word and commitments

If you do not keep your promises, you will not be respected or trusted. When you're a leader, your words and actions are vital. If you promise to eat meals together but never do so, you will betray your trust. Simply put, don't make any promises you can't keep

Reason 02: You only care about the numbers

The lack of control over a company's culture is the number one reason for failure (its employees). As a leader, you must care for and guide your employees while managing your department's or sector's finances. While your performance may base on numbers, the employee culture is what drives long-term results.

Reason 03: You lack confidence, and it shows.

You may be a new leader in a new field or department, or an experienced leader humbled by a correction. It shows in everything you do or say. Know that if you are in a leadership position, you earned it and must treat it with care and respect. Have a plan, be willing to be coached and learn new things. Be humble.

Reason 04: You lack boundaries

Employees promoted from within may face this issue. You may be a leader over peers, which raises new questions. Do we still hang out outside of work? Do I allow them to speak to me as a peer? Do I treat them as peers? And the answer is that it depends on the workplace culture, but a change is needed (a good one). Set up boundaries for how you should address as a leader. Realize that being friends outside of work may cause a bias towards other employees and that as a leader, you now have the responsibility to care about them.

Conclusion

Words are vital, but it is your actions that define you. The bottom line is that you should take care of yourself. Take an interest in your employees' well-being, aspirations, and so on. Get to know them as individuals, rather than just a number or the title of the position they hold. Numbers may fluctuate, but your culture should remain consistent.

  6. If your team appears to be frustrated with you, it's time for you to perform some self-reflection as their leader. Consider how your actions may have an impact on those around you, even if you aren't aware of it. You can start taking action to change your annoying behavior once you understand it.

  7. A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way – John C Maxwell. Great leaders don’t tell you what to do, they show you how it’s done. As discussed, leaders should carefully deal with the employees on keeping the promise, confidant on them, keep a gap when addressing them and do not only measure the number and appreciate the work they complete will ensure the image/respect among them.

As you have mentioned, delivering the promises and meeting the commitments are two important qualities for leader, to be an example to followers and also to build the trust with followers. Adding to that, enthusiasm, integrity and great communication skills are essential qualities to influence the followers (Fries, 2018).
